H2GE Rostock project

Together with the Norwegian energy company Equinor, the project will investigate the import, production and distribution of blue hydrogen (H2) and ammonia. The H2GE Rostock project will evaluate options for the production of low-CO‏2 hydrogen in Rostock. In addition to the planning, construction and operation of a hydrogen production plant, technologies for the sequestration and use of CO2 on an industrial scale are to be used. The joint efforts form the basis for a hydrogen and CO2 hub in the Rostock area and thus for local and regional value creation in Eastern Germany. In the future, a base-load supply of low-CO2 hydrogen to industry and a reduction in CO2 emissions can be assured.

We see decarbonised gases like the blue hydrogen from Rostock as an important part of our future supply portfolio in order to quickly ramp up market introduction of hydrogen. In particular, the many years of very good experience we have with Equinor give us the opportunity to secure large quantities of hydrogen for our customers in Germany at an early stage.

...the development and conversion of up to 400 kilometres of pipeline for hydrogen between Rostock, Berlin and the industrial clusters around Leipzig.

...the expansion of hydrogen storage capacity in large salt caverns at the underground gas storage facilities in Bernburg and Bad Lauchstädt in Saxony-Anhalt to ensure flexibility and security of supply with hydrogen.

...supplying industries with low CO2 hydrogen & thus reducing CO2 emissions by millions of tonnes per year compared to the current use of fossil fuels.
