H2GE Rostock project

Together with the Norwegian energy company Equinor, VNG is investigating the production of decarbonized hydrogen in Rostock as part of the H2GE project. The partners are examining the feasibility of production and supplying industrial customers in eastern Germany.

Natural gas from Norway, which already has very low greenhouse gas emissions, is to be used for hydrogen production. A gigawatt plant is to be built in Rostock to convert the natural gas into hydrogen. Methane reforming for the production of decarbonized hydrogen is a tried and tested standard process that has been used successfully in industry for many years.

In addition to the planning, construction and operation of the hydrogen production plant, technologies for the capture and storage of CO2 on an industrial scale are to be used. The CO2 could be stored safely and permanently under the seabed in existing reservoirs. For this purpose, the captured CO2 is liquefied and transported by ship via the port of Rostock. The CO2 footprint can be reduced by 95 percent or more.

The joint efforts form the basis for a hydrogen and CO2 hub in the Rostock area and thus for local and regional value creation in eastern Germany. The hydrogen produced in Rostock is to be made available primarily to industrial customers in eastern Germany from 2032, thus further driving the hydrogen ramp-up in Germany.

“We see decarbonized gases such as blue hydrogen from Rostock as an important part of our future supply portfolio in order to be able to quickly start the market ramp-up of hydrogen. The many years of excellent experience we have with Equinor in particular offer us the opportunity to secure large quantities of hydrogen for our customers in Germany at an early stage.”
