Carbon Management
Germany has set itself the goal of becoming climate neutral by 2045. The expansion of renewable energy sources such as hydrogen and biomethane and the phase-out of coal-fired power generation are key components of this strategy. However, these measures alone are not enough to achieve our climate protection goals. Energy-intensive industries such as steel, cement, and chemicals generate emissions that cannot be reduced, or can only be reduced with difficulty, through electrification or efficiency measures. The challenge is therefore not only to permanently reduce CO2 emissions, but also to effectively manage unavoidable emissions.
This is where carbon management comes in. The term refers to technologies that capture, transport, and reuse CO2 (CCU: carbon capture and utilization) or store it permanently (CCS: carbon capture and storage). The captured CO2 can, for example, be used as a raw material in the chemical industry or stored safely in geological formations. This prevents it from entering the atmosphere – an important piece of the puzzle on the road to a climate-neutral industry and society.

CARBONECT project: Focus on customer needs
In addition to our activities and projects related to the ramp-up of green gases, we at VNG Handel & Vertrieb GmbH want to contribute to a low-carbon future with innovative solutions for carbon management. To this end, we have launched the CARBONECT* project together with VNG AG and ONTRAS Gastransport GmbH in order to pool and jointly expand our activities and expertise in the field of CCU/S.
As a reliable partner, we want to play an intermediary role in the future carbon market between CO2 emitters, consumers, and storage sites along the entire CO2 value chain: We collect the CO2 directly at our customers' factory gates, aggregate the quantities efficiently, and ensure safe transport to the appropriate storage or utilization site.
In doing so, we take on the complex management of CO2 flows, create logistical and technological connections, and enable our customers to focus entirely on their core business. With decades of experience in the gas market and a broad portfolio of services along the entire gas value chain, we are ideally positioned to play a central role in the future carbon market.
* “CARBONECT”: Composed of the terms carbon and connect, the project name highlights the importance of supraregional, cooperative networks and partnerships along the entire CO₂ value chain for the emergence of a low-carbon future.
